We would like to bring to your attention the chronic disease Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MS is often thought to be a disease of the muscles. This, however , is not the case. MS is a disease of the central neurvous system. It gradually destroys the myelin that encapsulates the nerves. Why the body destroys this vital isolation of the nerve tracks remains a mystery.
From the brain the disease gradually spreads throughout the body. As it spreads motor and other body functions are damaged and finally destroyed. Apart from the fact that the patient finds himself impaired in his overall functioning, he or she may experience ‘MS-pains ‘ – pains caused by MS of which the mechanism remains unclear. Other symptoms of MS are: problems of balance and coordination, impairment of vision and hearing, problems of mobility. In addition MS may lead to other chronic diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, incontinence, …
Until today MS remains uncurable. There is no remedy or medicine to stop the disease from spreading throughout the body once it has manifested itself.
In order to give the specialized research centers more possibilities in their research into the causes and mechanisms of MS, we decided to organize the following activities on Wednesday 30 May 2012.
National Ms-Day and World MS-Day

Many small things add up to something big.
Our aim is to raise as many funds as possible. These funds will go directly to the MS-clinic of the Academic Hospital UZ Ghent (Professor Debruyne) so that more research on MS can be done.
We thank you all and look forward to meeting you on 30 May 2012.

Wednesday the 25th May : the action has taken end, but it's also the start to follow the politicians and the promises they have done. We will be very critical of their proposals. So, during the MS-Week in September, we will evaluate all the results.

All reactions are collected in a file. This file is handed over to our national and European policy making authorities in Brussels on 25th of May, world MS day 2011.
Why this action?
You may know someone with MS. Or maybe you see yourself day in day out confronted with MS. In either case SUPPORT this action.
MS is a disease that although not always visible gradually makes it impossible for the patient to function normally - physically as well as mentally. MS starts in the brain. It then progressively attacks the nervous system. As it spreads throughout the body, the patient's gait, balance, and vision deteriorate irreversibly. In the end the patient finds himself increasingly disabled and largely dependant on another person's help.
Belgium lags behind in its fight against MS and the impact it has - socially and financially - on the patient's life. There is no national register. Financial support remains insufficient. Not enough coverage from the media.

The pressure must increase.
Do not hesitate to convince friends and relatives that their support counts. In particular, do not forget the 'high-rankers' who are in a position to really force a change. Send them the link to this website.
